Tom Schaefer is a USA Track and Field certified coach.

About

In the early to mid 1970's Tom was a Track and Cross Country athlete, he stopped running after High School. In 1994 he started his 2nd running career to train with and coach his 3 children who were running cross country. Feeling there was some unfinished business in his own running, Tom started competing again. From 1995-2004 he completed 23 marathons including Boston, Chicago and New York. Tom was the founder and coach of the New Jersey Road Runners Youth Running program from 1999-2004. Since 2002 he has successfully coached first time and veteran marathoners. His athletes have shown significant improvement's under his tutorage. Tom is the head coach of the Asha Marathon Team. He is an assistant coach with Stinger's Track and Road Racing Team.

Life after marathoning

While Tom is currently coaching many marathoners, he retired from running marathons himself in 2004. In his final marathon at age 45, he finished 10th overall in the Charlottesville Virginia Marathon and was first in his age group. Now he competes in track races and road races from 800 meters to 5 miles. In 2005 he finished 3rd in his age group in the 800 meters at the USATF New Jersey Masters Championships. ****** FAST FORWARD TO 2007: NEVER SAY NEVER. Tom decided to "unretire" and trained for the 2007 Philadelphia Marathon. Tom finished the marathon in 3:24 and qualified for the Boston Marathon.
